Historically, the large-scale whaling industries of many countries devastated one species of whale after another. Although most populations of whales have been fully protected from hunting for some time, a number of these were reduced to such very low levels that it is taking them decades to recover.
Dolphins play an important role in keeping their environment in balance. They eat other animals – mainly fish and squid – and are themselves a source of food for some sharks and other creatures. Without dolphins, the animals they prey on would increase in number, and their predators wouldn’t have as much to eat. Dolphins rid the water of sick fish, helping to cut down on infectious disease among fish populations. … As the Peruvian ecology group Mundo Azule points out, dolphins are sanitary police of the ocean and killing them results in more disease and lower fish populations.
